From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded increased openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure

But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.

Yet some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to go on the attack.

“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Statement

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted

However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
